I was wandering round Brighton yesterday, when I saw a wall clock consisting of multicoloured stripes extending from the centre. In fact, it looked like a strange kind of time-keeping Tube map. But it inspired me to think up another clock which uses lines: a bar code clock.

And I mean a proper bar code clock, where the time is shown in the form of a bar code, not where the background is just a random bar code. So the current time when I write this would be:

That’s 010910085422 – the same as 01/09/10 08:54:22. From then on, every second, the bar code would change to show the current time. As far as I can tell, there isn’t a way to do this physically, so it’d have to be a computer-based project, but it’s something to aim for when I have some time on my hands.

Since the last time I made an episode, I’ve got a new camera, an Olympus E-420 – a DSLR, and I’m testing out some new editing software, Adobe Premiere Elements 9.

I’ve already made some progress, having captured the shots for the new titles and credits. All that’s left to do is think up an idea for the episode, then film it and compile it all together.

Watch this space for more Mr Cheese news, and if you have any ideas for an episode, please post it below in the comments!

Fact: Dettol is currently running this ad on TV for a no-touch automatic soap dispenser:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcgpdI_2cko

OK, so it’s like those dispensers in public toilets. But it’s obvious that this (while a nice demonstration of proximity sensors) is an unnecessary product. Yes, your hands touch “germy stuff” all the time, and yes, they’ll pick up bacteria that you should probably get rid of. When you go to wash your hands, chances are that some of those bacteria will end up on the pump of your soap dispenser.

But think about it, what’s the purpose of touching that dispenser and spreading nasties all over it? To get soap, to wash your hands with. As in, using water to get rid of dirt and bacteria that is on your hands.

So, yes, you’ll have to touch the pump to get any soap, which might mean you pick up a few extra passengers, but the very next thing you’re going to do after touching it is wash your hands! It doesn’t matter in the slightest whether there are germs on your dispenser, because even if there are, they can’t do anything to you anyway, because you’re about to remove them.

It’s adverts like this that prove just how much companies rely on scare tactics to make you buy things you never even realised you ‘need’. I can understand if they were just selling the soap, because soap from Dettol is probably fairly effective. But this just crosses the line into stupidity.

So, I’m sure you’ve noticed the new theme for the site; it’s hard not to, what with the total redesign and the huge picture of my head posted at the top. It’s the summer holidays, so I’ve had a *lot* of spare time — time I’ve put into creating this new theme! As for an idea of exactly how much time it’s taken to do, I’m not sure, but I only started a couple of weeks ago at the most.

As of late, I haven’t been posting very often, and everything I have posted has been Apple-related. Seeing as the site is “Josh Sunshine’s Random Ramblings”, from now on I’m going to steer clear of being yet another Apple news site, and focus on my thoughts and events related to me. New design, new purpose, I suppose.

A lot has changed around here since you were last able to visit. I’ve had a clearout of all my posts and pages, and started again so that everything is suited to the new point of the blog. There are a couple of the old posts floating about, but only ones that are relevant or important.

The post list isn’t totally bare, however; I’ve lovingly posted all my Mr Cheese’s Stop Motion Show videos, so they’re watchable from here rather than having to link to them on YouTube. You can find them in with the rest of the blog content on the main page, or view them separately by clicking on ‘Videos’ in the menu at the top of the page.

Speaking of that menu (made possible by the amazingness which is WordPress 3.0), I’ll explain the re-structuring of the site. Whereas before there was a static Home page and a separate Blog page, now the blog content is on the first page, and the static text can be found on the About page, if you want to read about me.

The ‘Photography’ page is, or rather, will be, a collection of galleries, all of which contain photos I’ve taken, and one of which will consist of my Photoshop work. Within those galleries, by clicking a thumbnail you can go through to an individual image view, which lists all the EXIF data for each image, such as what camera I used, the full size, etc. You can then click through the images either by using the navigation buttons underneath, or clicking directly on the image you’re viewing will take you to the next one.

Also, that bar at the top of the page that follows you as you scroll is what I like to call the Admin Bar. If you have an account and are logged in, it shows you links for useful things such as editing your profile.

I think that’s about it for now, except to mention that if you’re using Internet Explorer to view this, you’re missing out on some of the CSS 3 features I’ve used such as rounded corners and shadows. I’d recommend using a different web browser such as Safari or Firefox.

Oh, there’s one more thing; I’ve installed After the Deadline for comments, which is a spelling and grammar checker. To use it when you post a comment, click the icon which has a green check mark and the letters ‘ABC’.

If you’ve been out and about with your iPhone near other people’s houses, you’ve probably noticed many Wi-Fi networks called BT Openzone. Openzone is a service that BT broadband users can sign up to which gives them free access to other BT routers and Openzone hotspots. The problem is, they’re all called BT Openzone, which means that if you log in to one of them on your iPhone, it’ll remember it and try to connect to them every time you’re nearby one. This makes your life difficult because they require a password to be typed into Safari, and this means you can’t use other apps that require the internet to work.

To be able to use your data network even while you’re near an Openzone hotspot, you’re going to have to disconnect from the network. This usually requires turning off Wi-Fi, which is a pain because then you have to turn it back on again later.

There is a way to solve this though. Next time you’re near an Openzone hotspot, load up the Settings app. Choose Wi-Fi, then tap the little blue circle next to the Openzone network. At the top, there is an option labelled ‘Auto Login’. Turn this off and voila! Your iPhone will never again automatically connect to an Openzone network again!

A recent addition to the masses of groups on Flickr is The Eno Project, a group focusing on using images to display phrases from Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies. The idea is to use a randomly selected Oblique Strategy and incorporate it as realistically as possible into a photo using Photoshop or similar.

I’ve been creating some images for said group, and you can find them on my Flickr photostream. Here are just a couple of examples of the ones I’ve been creating:

As you can see, all it takes is a simple image and a small amount of text, but the results can be quite interesting. Why not join the group yourself, if you’re on Flickr? It’s rather fun once you get into it!
